Overheard An Hour Ago.

Let me set this up.
I was in the kitchen working a bag of radishes I had purchased.
My first grader grandaughter was doing what she likes to do best. She was kneeling at the coffee table in the livng room while writing a story with her newly acquired reading and writing ability. She can sound out most words. She was having some trouble this time and asked her grandma how to spell a word. She usually has grandma's full attention but this time there was a good movie playing. The conversation.
C: "Grandma?"
G: No response.
C: "Grandma?"
G: "Yes C." (said while still staring at the TV.)
C: "How do you spell knock?"
G: No response.
C: (louder this time) "Grandma, how do you spell knock?"
G: "K N"
C: (even louder) "No Grandma, how do you spell knock?"
G: "K N" (I'm beginning to shake from laughing but at least I'm not laughing outloud)
C: (Now interupting.) "I said how do you spell knock Grandma?"
G: "K N O" (still staring at the tv and not nearly as tickled as I)
C: (Now standing and walking over to grandma and talking loud enough as though she was talking to me.) "GRANDMA, WHAT I ASKED IS HOW DO YOU SPELL KNOCK?"
G: "C, some letters are silent. The K is there even though you can't hear it. It's k n o c k."

My grandaughter has now had her first lesson in logic, meaning that sometimes there isn't any involved. Or as they say; Women wouldn't have been the ones riding side saddle.

I can just see this happening and see how funny it must have been.
Logic, reason, and sense have no place when spelling words like knock, gnat, pharmacy, wrong, psycho... need I go on?

Oh, that pesky English language, eh? Poor kid.

LOL. Then there's the whole knight - night thing.

Cliff, I go through that with my grandkids sometimes too....

Hopefully that whole "sound it out" with a kazillion exceptions won't deter her from writing. At least Grandma didn't say "look it up!"

it would see you have a 3rd Grader, potential author to be, it was "Grandma" who caught the duty this time----your next. (lol)

Hi Cliff -- Did Marilyn tell you later that you should have answered for her so she wouldn't have missed so much TV?
I don't know how you can get away with posts like this, when I talk about or show pictures of Mrs. Jim I first have to get her approval and some selective editing.

John (H) and I talked for a long time tonight. Yesterday was his birthday. He talked about your blog (mine too) and he doesn't even have a computer. He mainly knew things from what is in the paper.
Anyway, he said you had about ten inches of snow. I figured I would get the lowdown on it here. Or did you lose power after this last post?
Hang in there. Oh yes, he said Mom and Dad's town place now has a home on it again. :-)

10 inches of snow?? I was just reading what Jim said.

Those words are hard to learn! I remember I had such a tough time with "it" and "hit" when I was a youngster.

You know it's nice to have some entertainment while working a bag of radishes!

Cliff, this is my life right now! My daughter is in 2nd grade, and the words are getting harder, and we are trying to spell them appropriately together. It is fun and frustrating at the same time. Cute story.

I'm not sure I like the way you made this a feminist issue. Is Marilyn aware of your blog?

Good one Cliff. I can see you standing there chuckling wondering how in the world it is all going to play out.

Sounds like conversations at home. Only without the TV.

I want to know what "working a bag of radishes" means.
If you can get a bag of radishes to do dishes and take out the trash let me know.

Things are even tougher here Cliff where we use "English" instead of "US" spelling, you Know all those extra U's and very few Z's
